Volunteer Policy

Washburn Amateur Hockey Association is a volunteer-run organization and requires the entire "community" to volunteer in support of a successful operation. In addition, District 1 and Minnesota Hockey require associations to pledge volunteers at District, Regional and State tournaments, regardless if you have a team participating in those tournaments.

At registration, each family with one, or more, Mite/U8, Squirt/U10, Peewee/U12 or Bantam/U14 player is required to submit a "volunteer deposit check" of $200 over and above the Player Fees.  Each family is expected to volunteer 20 hours of service, per season, for the association with which you register (WAHA = your "home" association) or forfeit the $200 deposit. Your volunteer deposit check will be destroyed upon the completion of a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service per family.  Reimbursement of partial credit for working less than 20 hours  will not be given. Parents volunteering for time-intensive service, such as team coach (included on USA Hockey roster), team manager (1 per team), level coordinator (1 per level), Tournament Director, board member and other volunteer position approved by the WAHA Executive Committee, will qualify as fulfilling all 20 hours of service at the completion of the season. The completion of the 2009-2010 season is March 28, 2010. You are responsible for coordinating your volunteer service with the leaders of WAHA-sponsored events. Leaders for WAHA-sponsored events will be posted on this web site.

Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities for volunteering for WAHA include, but are not limited to, helping at:

·         Official recruiting efforts.

·         Registration.

·         District games, for game-clock, scorebook and penalty box duties.

·         WAHA Day and/or team picture day (s).

·         Wings of Spring Tournament.

·         District, Regional and State tournaments.

For our Wings of Spring tournament -- in the event game-critical roles cannot be filled with volunteers, all Storm teams participating in the tournaments will be obligated to staff the game-clock, scorebook and penalty box roles for their own games plus additional games, if needed.  These tournament hours can be applied toward your home association volunteer policy.

WAHA may open cross-volunteering opportunities at Southwest-sponsored events. Cross-volunteering opportunities at Southwest-sponsored events, such as the Minneapolis Cup Tournament over Thanksgiving Weekend, will be opened to WAHA volunteers on specific dates listed on this web site. YOU CAN NOT REGISTER FOR SOUTHWEST-SPONSORED EVENTS PRIOR TO THE EVENT BEING LISTED ON THIS WEB SITE.  Volunteering for Southwest-sponsored events may require your activation on the Storm DIBS system. Please contact the event coordinator for information on the Storm DIBS system.

Accounting for Volunteer Hours

The volunteer policy is run on a personal monitoring basis.  It is the responsibility of each family to account for their families volunteer hours. Upon the completion of the families 20 hours of service, families must submit written documentation of their volunteer hours to Sherri Knight, Volunteer Coordinator. You can receive service credit for working game-critical jobs (game-clock, scorebook and penalty box), for only the length of the game. Managing team statistics, team pictures or other non-critical roles does not qualify for volunteering service.  For all other service credit, please round fraction of hours worked up to the closest 1/4 hour. Volunteering service opportunities conclude on March 28, 2010 or the end of the Bantam A State Tournament (which is sponsored by District 1). Volunteering between March 28, 2010 and September 1, 2010 will apply toward the 2010-2011 season. Written documentation of your families service hours can be mailed to Sherri Knight, 5921 Sunrise Dr., Minneapolis, MN 55419.  Written documentation can be emailed in the body of the email or as a Word Document to sherri.knight@comcast.net. The written documentation must include the event(s) name, event(s) date(s), job description, hours worked and your email address. Sherri will confirm the completion of your service obligation and destruction of your deposit check via email. Please contact Sherri with additional questions on volunteering.

Wings of Spring Planning Committee Positions:

Help lead our largest fundraising effort by becoming a Wings of Spring Planning Committee member. These positions are available to help prepare for our Wings of Spring tournament held March 12-14 at Parade Ice Garden. Each position ensures 20 hours of volunteering. Some responsibilities can be completed prior to the tournament.  Please contact Paul Larson at polarson@aol.com to learn more about each position. The available positions are:

  • Advertising: Help organize and sell advertising in our souvenir program.
  • Assistant Tournament Director: Assist the tournament director plan, prepare and execute the tournament. Ideally, this candidate should be a Mite or Squirt parent who is willing to become Tournament Director for the next few years.

There will be more than 400 hours of hourly job positions available at the tournament itself. More information on hourly positions will be posted in February.
