Registration

12-7-09 Update:  Registration for the 2009-2010 season is now closed. Have a great season!

Welcome to Registration for the Washburn Amateur Hockey Association

We are excited to announce that  registration for WAHA boys and girls for the 2009-2010 season has gone "on-line" offering a streamlined process for registration and Player Fee payment with Visa, Mastercard, Discover or Paypal methods of payment. You can register "Off-line" if credit card payment is not possible. As the Minneapolis hockey associations (Washburn and Southwest) grow closer together, you'll note that your on-line registration experience is hosted on the "Southwest/Mpls-Storm" website. By sharing registration on the same system, we are able to minimize the cost of registration and streamline the flow of information between organizations. It takes about 15 minutes to register (a few more minutes per additional player), including the required USA Hockey registration process. After reading the registration instructions below, follow the "TO REGISTER ON-LINE NOW" link  to register your player(s) in the Washburn Amateur Hockey Association. For a more detailed explanation of registration topics, please see "Registration Details" at the bottom of this page.

Registration - Executive Summary

If you do not know your players age group, there is a link provided in the On-line Registration process that will guide you.

For the 2009-2010 season, Washburn Player Fees (not including USA Hockey registration) are as follows:

  • Mini-Mites / U6:  $225
  • Mites / U8:  $350
  • Squirts / U10: $850
  • Peewee / U12: $1175
  • Bantam / U14:  $1275

Residents from outside Minneapolis that attend schools within the Washburn area are eligible to register/play for Washburn. The Mini-mite/U6 and Mite/U8 fees are the same as above for all Non-residents. The "Non-resident" (but go to school in the WAHA area) Player Fees for the other age groups are:

  • Squirts / U10: $1075
  • Peewee / U12: $1400
  • Bantam / U14: $1500

Full-time goalies for Squirt/U10, Peewee/U12 and Bantam/U14 pay 50% through the on-line registration process. Full-time goalies are allowed to tryout for goalie positions and will be placed on teams as a goalie. If they change positions anytime throughout the season then their Player Fees will change to the full amount.

Programs

This season, the boys and girls programs will be a cooperative effort between Southwest and Washburn hockey associations. As such, the "host" association will uniform their respective teams. Ultimately, WAHA players will be assigned to either a "Storm" team or a WAHA team depending on the age and ability of the player.

USA Hockey

The fees assessed by USA Hockey is $40 which includes fees assessed by MN Hockey. All players are required to register with USA Hockey (which includes registration with MN Hockey). Mini-mites must register for USA Hockey but do not pay the USA Hockey fees.  Our registration process will guide you through USA/MN Hockey registration.  See below "Details" to learn more about USA Hockey registration.

Payment Plan

  1. On-Line:  The on-line registration system offers two primary payment plans for our WAHA Player Fees. You can pay the Player Fees for the entire year at the time of registration or you can select a 2-payment plan and pay 50% at the time of registration with the remaining balance automatically paid to your credit card on January 15, 2010.  If you select the 2-payment option, you can make "installment payments" to your account anytime through January 15. Mini-mites/U6 and Mites/U8 are given only one "pay in full" option at the time of registration.
  2. Off-Line: The same payment plans are offered to families who pay via personal check.  Mini-mites/U6 and Mites/U8 are given only one "pay in full" option at the time of registration. All other ages can pay in full at time of registration or pay 50% at the time of registration with the remaining balance due on January 15, 2010. You may make installment payments prior to your final billing in January.  Families who seek different payment plans should submit a Scholarship request indicating the payment plan requested.  See "Off-line" registration instructions below.

Regardless of the payment plan, WAHA exercises a "no-pay, no-skate" policy. Players will not be allowed to skate if payments are not kept current.

Unpaid Balances

Players will not be allowed to skate if unpaid balances from last season are not paid in full at the time of registration.  The On-line system allows unpaid balances to be paid in full on your credit card, along with the registration for the 2009-2010 season. During "check-out" of the on-line registration process, you will be asked to enter your "Unpaid Balance" from last season. Players will not be allowed to skate unless their unpaid balance is paid in full along with their initial payment from this season.

Volunteering

All families are required to submit one Volunteer Agreement and a volunteer deposit of $200.00 through the on-line registration process. The deposit will be destroyed upon completion of 20 hours of volunteering service. Your volunteer hours stay with your HOME assocation (WAHA), not the assocation that may host your players team. Credit is applied for specific WAHA-sanctioned events.

Coaches

Please see "Coaches Corner" tab on WAHA web site for information on coaching.

Team Managers

If you are interested in volunteering as a Team Manager then select "yes" in the "Team Manager" box when you register your player(s) on-line. If selected as a Team Manager then you will need to complete the Coach/Manager/Board application and the Screening Form which are both found in the "forms" section of this web site.

Beginning the Season

After you've registered, please stay tuned to the "Teams" tab of the WAHA web site. Each age group is represented under the Teams section. Find your age group to learn when the season begins for your players. Bantam and Peewee clinics begin September 14. Squirt clinics begin in late September. The Mite program will begin in mid-October with Mini-mites beginning in early November. Information on the girls program will be posted on the girls site under "Teams."

To Register

Through the on-line system, a series of questions will be asked for each age-group. After final check-out, you will receive an email confirming your registration. The email will state " Thank you for completing the registration 2009-2010 Washburn Registration with Minneapolis Park Hockey." Rest assured, by receiving this email you will have successfully registered for WASHBURN (through the on-line system hosted by Mpls-Park). There are 4 primary steps that the on-line process will lead you through:

  1. The link will take you to the "Storm" login page. If you have used the Storm system in the past (a summer hockey clinic) then you can use the same login and password that you previously established. If you have never used the system, then you will have to "create and account."
  2. You will be asked to register for USA Hockey. Print and save your confirmation.
  3. You will be asked to register your players for Washburn Hockey. Remember to print and complete the necessary forms.
  4. Mail the Concent To Treat, Volunteer Agreement and your $200 volunteer deposit to the registrar or drop them off at Parade Ice Gardens on September 12 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. You must also include 2 copies of the Birth Certificate of any player who has never played in WAHA previously.

WAHA Player Fees:

Player Fees should be viewed as the cost associated to be a playing member of WAHA.  The fees associated with playing in WAHA include, but are not limited to the costs of, registration, player evaluations, independent evaluators,  ice time for practices, games and scrimmages, dryland training, coaching certification, paid coaches, tournaments, referees, district fees and association overhead. Since ice costs are a function of Player Fees, you’ll note that the prices increase per age, where the higher age groups and levels of play require more ice time. Player Fees are set by age group and  not by the ability-level.  Washburn attempts to offer a similar on-ice experience (frequency of play, etc.) for all ability levels within each age group. Washburn offsets some  costs of  playing hockey through it's charitable gambling operation and "Wings of Spring" fundraising tournament.

Player Fees do not include the $200 Volunteer Fee paid to WAHA.

Player Fees do not include the $40 registration fee paid to USA Hockey.

Player Fees do not include additional ice and/or tournaments that teams want to purchase on their own.

What is Paid at "Registration"?

Due to changes within USA Hockey (the governing body of "traveling" hockey within the Unites States) there are now two steps to the "registration’ process:

  1. First you have to register with USA Hockey. USA Hockey provides governing structure, rules, umbrella player insurance, umbrella coaching insurance, coaching certification & referee certification structure and other benefits for players and associations. Every "traveling" hockey player in the United States must be a member of USA Hockey.  Your player (and coaches) register at USA Hockey at  http://www.usahockeyregistration.com/.  Mini-mites have to register with USA Hockey, but are not required to pay the $40 registration fee.
  2. Then, all age groups have to register in your home association (WAHA).  WAHA (your home association) provides the hockey "services" that your player will experience. To register for WAHA you must follow the registration instructions above.

In addition to the USA Hockey fee ($40 per player) and the WAHA Player Fee (which depends on your players age) there is a $200 volunteer fee per family, which is due at the time you register with WAHA. See "Volunteering" below for more information.

For Peewee, U12 and Bantam Players: Evaluations (tryouts) will take place the first full week in October.  Teams will be posted by October 15.  WAHA will refund your Volunteer Fee, Player Fee and Tryout Fee minus $100  if you choose to not play in WAHA by October 18, 2009. "Tryout Fees" are non-refundable. You are obligated for the entire year once your player participates in a practice, scrimmage or game after October 18, 2008.

For U14 Players: Final team placement takes place later in the season. WAHA will refund 1/2 of your Player Fees for the season in the event you withdraw from the program prior to the final rosters being set. Your Volunteer Fee will not be returned unless you complete all 20 hours of service prior to your player withdrawing. You are financially obligated for the entire year once the final rosters are set (expected to be in early November).

For all other age groups:  Final team placement takes place later in the season. WAHA will refund your Player Fees minus $100 in the event your player chooses to withdraw from the program by December 1, 2009. Your Volunteer Fee will not be returned unless you complete all 20 hours of service prior to your player withdrawing. You are financially obligated for the entire year once your player participates in a practice, game or scrimmage after December 1, 2009.

Programs

For the 2009-2010 season, both the girls and the boys programs are cooperative efforts between Southwest and Washburn hockey associations. As such, the players will be placed on either a "Storm" team or a "Washburn" team.  The higher-level teams will be determined strictly by ability. The lower level teams will be determined by ability and geographic proximity to each other. It is possible that some players may be needed to suppliment teams outside Washburn or Southwest associations.

USA Hockey Registration

"USA Hockey" is the governing body of competitive hockey in the United States. "MN Hockey" is an affiliate under USA Hockey and acts as the governing body within our state.  Each are non-profit organizations that provides services to players, coaches, referees and associations. To learn more about these services, please visit http://www.usahockey.com . All competitive hockey players in the US, plus coaches & referees, have to be registered with USA Hockey. The cost of registration and their services is $30 for USA Hockey and $10 for MN Hockey.  You register with both, and make one payment, through our registration process. Mini-mites must be registered but do not pay a fee.

Volunteering

All families who register for WAHA are required to submit a Volunteering Service Agreement and a personal check in the amount of $200 as a deposit for volunteering service. When 20 hours of service per family  is completed, the check will be destroyed. If 20 hours of service is not completed by the end of the season, the check will be cashed. Each family is required to complete a Volunteer Service Agreement which is posted on this web site and included in the registration process. The Volunteer Service Agreement and check are due prior to your player participating on the ice. You can receive volunteer credit by working at any WAHA-sponsored events. Working for events that are not sponsored by WAHA will not apply to your volunteering service. Parents are responsible for keeping track of their families hours.
